40 Day Devotional: Day 16: my favorite prayers

image

Although I often pray by heart, I love praying words of others too!

Prayer to Do Good (F.B. Meyer England, 1847-1929)

Forgive me, most gracious Lord and Father, if this day I have done or said anything to increase the pain of the world. Pardon the unkind word, the impatient gesture, the hard and selfish deed, the failure to show sympathy and kindly help where I had the opportunity, but missed it; and enable me so to live that I may daily do something to lessen the tide of human sorrow, and add to the sum of human happiness.

Prayer from Dietrich Bonhoeffer
(Germany, 1906-1945)

O God, early in the morning I cry to you. Help me to pray; and to concentrate my thoughts on you; I cannot do this alone.
In me there is darkness, but with you there is light; I am lonely, but you do not leave me; I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help; I am restless, but with you there is peace.
In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience; I do not understand your ways, but you know the way for me. . . .
Restore me to liberty, and enable me to live now that I may answer before you and before men.
Lord, whatever this day may bring, your name be praised.
Amen.

And this one is one of my favs as well:

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace!
That where there is hatred, I may bring love.That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness.
That where there is discord, I may bring harmony.
That where there is error, I may bring truth.That where there is doubt, I may bring faith.That where there is despair, I may bring hope.That where there are shadows, I may bring light.
That where there is sadness, I may bring joy.Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort, than to be comforted.
To understand, than to be understood.
To love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

—Saint Francis of Assisi—

Be inspired!

Tell me, what are your favorite prayers?

  1. Hi Ester,
    It’s a prayer and a song used by the Northumbria Community in the UK. Don’t know who wrote it. Awesome, is ‘t it?
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. “Christ, as a light
    illumine and guide me.
    Christ, as a shield
    overshadow me.
    Christ under me;
    Christ over me;
    Christ beside me
    on my left and my right.
    This day be within and without me,
    lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
    Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
    in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
    This day be within and without me,
    lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
    Christ as a light;
    Christ as a shield;
    Christ beside me
    on my left and my right”

    p.s. Next week (March 17-22) without social media. Living in silence for a week.

    Blessings,
    ‘DIAC’
